Asantehemaa Worried About OVer 7,000 Shops Using One Meter At The Kejetia Market

Asantehemaa Nana Afia Konadu III has raised concern over the New Kejetia Market's bulk metre issue, which has sparked a spat between the market board and traders.

Adwenehemaa Nana Grace Agyei Darko, one of the 68 queen mothers at the Kejetia Market, confirmed this development.

Adwenehemaa, the queenmother of Mad fish sellers at Kejetia and central market, revealed on Akoma FM's current affairs and political show GhanAkoma Tuesday, January 24, that the slow pace at which the market's board and management are dealing with the metre issues at Kejetia has been a headache for the Asantehemaa.

As a result, she emphasised the importance of expediting processes in order to alleviate market tensions.

She added that "there are sixty eight queen mothers [market leaders] who have been appointed by the Asantehemaa so we work in the capacity and powers of the Golden stool; the Queen is really worried about the several issues at the market topical among them is the single meter the over seven thousand shops are hooked onto so the KMA mayor and the market management must sit up and resolve this issue once and for all".

There are almost 7,000 lockable businesses inside the Kejetia market, and all of them are connected to one metre, so the light bills are split among the vendors at the end of the month, a condition that the shopkeepers have since bitterly opposed.

They insist that each store have its own metre.

The single metre is the primary reason for the current power outage at the market since traders' requests for separate metres appear to have fallen on deaf ears.

They also decided to stop payments of service charges and light bills, resulting in a piled-up light bill of approximately GH4.6 million.
