Peace Council Concerned About Conflicts In Bawku, Buipe And Battor

Bawku conflict

Recent disagreements in various regions of the nation have alarmed the National Peace Council (NPC), particularly in Bawku in the Upper East Region, Battor in the Volta Region, and Buipe in the Savannah Region.

The Council stated that disagreements, many of which have been chieftaincy-related, have resulted in fatalities, injuries, and property losses in these areas alone in December 2022.

According to the Council, this might "derail the gains of peace and stability in the country."

The Council brought up these issues in its end-of-year statement.

However, it expressed satisfaction with Ghana's placement in the report of the 2022 Global Peace Index.

"The 2022 Global Peace Index Report ranked Ghana as the second most peaceful country in Africa and the first in West Africa.

"This feat has not been achieved in a vacuum," the statement signed by Chairman Reverend Dr Ernest Adu Gyamfi said.

"It’s indeed, our collective efforts, as a people, determined to sustain our peace and democracy."

It expressed appreciation for "their contributions to the peace and stability of the country" to the government, traditional leaders, political parties, corporations, academic institutions, international organizations, civil society, and the people of Ghana.

The Council encouraged the regional security councils (REGSECs) of the affected areas "to conduct the necessary inquiry into the circumstances that led to these unfortunate occurrences" in regard to the pockets of violence.

It exhorted everyone participating in conflict resolution procedures to cooperate closely with the REGSECs in order to settle issues amicably.
